  • Do you have all of the necessary equipment for your assessments? (calculator, ruler etc.)
  • Check out the Skills Hub for assessment tips and advice
  • Have you created a manageable revision schedule?
  • Have you checked the University Exam Regulations to see what you can and can't take into the exam venue?
  • Have you made arrangements for your assessments? (e.g transport, childcare, time off work)
  • If you need extra time or other adjustments, make sure these have been made for you.
  • Make sure you are familiar with the Mitigating Circumstances policy - just in case you can't make it to an assessment.

Assessment Tips and Advice

Before your assessment

  • Check the exam timetable regularly as dates and times can change.
  • Create a manageable revision schedule.
  • Take regular breaks while studying - especially to eat and drink.
  • Contact your personal tutor if you have any questions.
  • Practice using past exam papers if you can.
  • Allow yourself time to relax - don't spent all day and night studying.
  • Make sure you get a good sleep the night before an assessment.
  • Make sure you bring your student ID card to your exam.
  • Be at the exam venue at least 15 minutes before the start time.
  • Complete the Assessment Checklist above.

During your assessment

  • Read the question carefully.
  • Write an answer/essay plan before starting the question, this gives you a structure to follow.
  • If you become stuck, move onto the next question and return to it later.
  • Make sure you answer the question - don't just write down everything you have memorised.
  • Stay hydrated - you can take a bottle of water into the exam venue.
  • If you feel anxious, pause for a moment and breathe.
  • Leave time at the end to check over your answers.
Sanitary Products

In line with the Scottish Government’s commitment to provide access to free sanitary products, Heriot Watt University makes available a wide range of products to students and staff. We are committed to supporting equality, dignity and rights for all those who menstruate and ensure that there is no impact on an individual’s ability to fully participate in education at all levels.

Consultation

Consultation and feedback from the student union and service users has been used to determine what provision of free period products was best suited to the needs of our community. The results were used to inform both the range of period products to be made available and how products would be distributed.

Product range

Following consultation with the student community it was clear that a wide range of period products was needed to meet different needs and preferences. The specific brands of product offered are determined by availability and value via procurement frameworks and product feedback from the student community. Our free sanitary products are available in various locations across all of our campus locations and working closely with our Students' Union we will ensure:

  • A free of charge range of products
  • Access to re-usable and sustainable options
  • Availability within toilet facilities and student support facilities
  • Provision with dignity and respect
  • Communication and information on our student portal
  • Equality for all, reducing negative stigma across our University community

In addition to having stock in toilet facilities across our campus locations in Edinburgh, Galashiels and Orkney, period products can also be collected from the following locations:

  • Student Union Advice Hub in the Hugh Nisbet, Edinburgh Campus
  • Residence Life Hub – Cristina Miller West, Edinburgh Campus
  • Jean Muir Student Village, Galashiels Campus
