Hi! My name is Minka. In 2024 I graduated from the British Sign Language & Applied Language Studies course at Heriot - Watt. I was born in Finland but moved to the UK in 2016. Being an international student has given me insight into some of the unique challenges you might face during your time at university. Other than a passion for languages, my hobbies include playing the viola, and indoor bouldering. The topic of my dissertation was LGBTQ Terminology in BSL. I'm hoping that with my recent experience as a student I will be able to assist you with any questions about your time at Heriot - Watt.

Heriot - Watt Highlight
I had multiple highlights during my course, one of which was finally meeting my cohort in person after a period of online learning between 2020-2021! Another of my favourite experiences was my placement year. I spent half of my third year working at a Deaf organisation in Cambridgeshire, after which I travelled all the way to Brisbane, Australia for my second placement. If you get the opportunity to do some travelling for your course, I encourage you to go for it!
