18. Acer platanoides 'Crimson King’
The Norway maple is Native to Europe and Asia. They can live up to 250 years and grow up to 30 metres (100 feet) high. This young specimen is 6 metres (20 feet) tall and was planted to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Riccarton Estate being gifted to Heriot-Watt University (more information on commemorative stone). The wood is used in furniture making, flooring and musical instruments. Many Stradivarius violins were thought to be made from Norway maple.
