The u-Care research group, led by Heriot-Watt University, has been selected for a prestigious exhibition place at the Royal Society’s annual Summer Science Exhibition (SSE) in London.
The group will join just 13 other flagship exhibitors to present hands-on public engagement activities demonstrating the core science behind u-Care’s innovative technology.
Professor Robert Thomson, Director and Principal Investigator of the U-care EPSRC Programme Grant, and academic co-lead of the Global Research Institute in Health and Care Technologies at Heriot-Watt University, said:
“The u-CARE team is incredibly excited to exhibit at the Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition and look forward to engaging with a diverse public audience about the potential of future light-based technologies, to improve the treatment of some of the most challenging health conditions.”
The u-CARE project is a multidisciplinary project, funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), exploiting cutting-edge techniques in laser physics to develop new sources of deep UV light which are compact and robust. Precision delivery of this light could be key to some of the biggest challenges facing medicine, including cellular-precision cancer surgery. The project team is made up of engineers and physical scientists in collaboration with clinicians and biomedical scientists based between Heriot-Watt University, the University of Edinburgh, and the University of Bath.
Kev Dhaliwal, Professor of Molecular Imaging and Healthcare Technology at the University of Edinburgh, and a Consultant Physician in Respiratory Medicine, added:
“We’re really humbled that the Royal Society have chosen our project for their Summer Science Exhibition in London in July. It provides a fantastic platform for our great team and partners to engage widely and generate new friends.”
The SSE presents cutting edge research from across the UK in exciting and interactive ways. It welcomes over 10,000 members of the public each year, including 2,000 school pupils.
