Art and design
Design is an important theme that applies across all of our disciplines at Heriot-Watt University. The School of Textiles and Design is based at our Scottish Borders Campus Galashiels.
School of Textiles & Design (TEX)
Our research in textiles and design covers a wide range of disciplines, from textile science, engineering and technology, colour chemistry and physics, to clothing and design. Our specialism is in research at the design/technology interface where we develop technologies and exploit design applications in tandem. The School works closely with the textiles industry at home and abroad and is a founder member of the Scottish Academy of Fashion.
School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society (EGIS)
Effective planning and urban design are fundamental to shaping our cities and towns and have a pivotal role in achieving important development objectives, such as a wealthier and fairer, healthier and safer society. The mission of the Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Building Design is to achieve greater use of design quality assessment tools relevant to buildings, infrastructure, public spaces and places by advancing scientific understanding in architectural engineering, construction management and planning.
School of Engineering & Physical Sciences (EPS)
Within EPS, the Institute of Mechanical, Process and Energy Engineering carries out research in product design and manufacturing. Critical manufacturing and healthcare research issues covering the whole product life cycle from conceptualisation, analysis, testing and prototyping through to manufacture, delivery and recycling.
