As we celebrate International Women's Day 2024 with the theme "Inspire Inclusion," Heriot-Watt University is excited to highlight the incredible contributions of women within our community. Among them is Professor Gabriela Medero, whose journey embodies creativity, innovation, and a deep commitment to sustainability.

Finding purpose in sustainability

Gabriela's passion for sustainability and engineering was ignited early on in her career. With a background in civil engineering and a keen interest in environmental sciences, her pregnancy inspired her to use this knowledge to make a positive difference in the world, by building a sustainable future for the next generation.

Pioneering sustainable solutions

Gabriela's work focuses on transforming the construction industry's approach to sustainability. Recognizing the environmental impact of traditional building materials and the need to conserve natural resources, she led the development of the K-Briq—a revolutionary innovation made from over 90% recycled construction and demolition waste. This eco-friendly alternative to traditional bricks significantly reduces carbon emissions and resource depletion, offering a sustainable solution for construction projects.

Empowering communities

Beyond innovation, Gabriela's efforts extend to empowering local communities, especially in areas vulnerable to environmental hazards. Through collaborative initiatives and knowledge-sharing, she equips communities with the tools to mitigate risks and build resilient infrastructure. Her projects in South America have not only improved safety standards but also raised awareness about environmental conservation among community members.

Nurturing innovation and collaboration

Gabriela attributes part of her success to strategic partnerships and support from institutions like Heriot-Watt University. With a forward-thinking approach and a commitment to applied research, the university provides a fertile ground for innovation in sustainable construction. Through interdisciplinary collaboration and a supportive ecosystem, Heriot-Watt enables researchers like Gabriela to translate groundbreaking ideas into tangible solutions that address real-world challenges.

Championing diversity and inclusion

As a woman in STEM, Gabriela advocates for greater diversity and inclusion in engineering and sustainability. Her advice to aspiring young women is simple: follow your passion, embrace your strengths, and pursue your dreams with determination. By breaking down barriers and challenging stereotypes, Gabriela inspires the next generation of female leaders to envision a future where sustainability and innovation go hand in hand.

Looking ahead

As we move towards a more sustainable future, Gabriela remains committed to driving positive change. With ongoing research and innovation, she envisions a world where sustainable construction practices are the norm, and environmental stewardship is ingrained in society. Through her dedication and perseverance, Gabriela embodies the transformative power of women in shaping a brighter, more sustainable world for all.

On this International Women's Day, let us celebrate the achievements of women like Gabriela Medero, whose passion, innovation, and leadership are paving the way for a more sustainable and inclusive future.
