International Cultural Day HWUM 2024

As a gesture of appreciation towards diversified communities here, Heriot-Watt University Malaysia (HWUM) organised an International Cultural Day to create a platform for students with different cultural backgrounds to showcase the uniqueness of their culture originating from their hometown. The goal was to foster cross-cultural understanding and appreciation among students from diverse backgrounds while creating a space where they could share their stories, traditions, and values.

This event took place at The Plaza on 6 March 2024, where many attractions and activities were provided to the HWUM community, such as cultural booths, cultural delicacy food tastings, and more. Several countries participated in cultural booths, including Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, China, and some other countries from the Middle East.

Some booths promoted traditional food, while others shared their cultural heritage (clothing, apparel, traditional games, etc.). Members of the HWUM community also wore traditional attire, showing their support.

The event’s highlight was the Cultural Night, which took place after the booth opening sessions. The night was filled with traditional musical performances, fashion shows, and dances exclusively performed by the students.

Shandy Chong, the head of the event organiser and Vice President of Wellbeing, stated, “The International Cultural Day was a resounding success, showcasing the rich tapestry of diversity within our university community. Through vibrant displays of cultural attire, culinary delights and engaging performances, the event fostered a sense of inclusiveness and unity among students from all backgrounds, highlighting our commitment to celebrating and embracing cultural diversity.”

Intercultural Week celebrated diversity and underscored Heriot-Watt University’s commitment to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for all. It reminded us that, despite our differences, we are united by our shared humanity and the desire to learn from one another.

As the International Cultural Day ended, the spirit of unity and respect lingered in the hearts and minds of all participants and organisers. Heriot-Watt University’s dedication to intercultural exchange inspires and empowers individuals to embrace diversity as a source of strength and enrichment.
