Message from the Chaplain

Hello! I’m Jane your University Chaplain. As Chaplain to the University, I’m available to chat with you about matters of faith and spirituality, the big questions of life and whatever’s on your mind. As Chaplain, I aim to be a non-anxious presence on campus and offer a confidential space for students and staff alike.

Time spent at university offers a wonderful opportunity to explore the things that interest us. It’s a time to stretch our minds and broaden our horizons, exchange ideas with one another and work out what is important in our lives. At Heriot-Watt we recognise the value of looking after the whole person. Alongside all our academic and wellbeing options, the Chaplaincy provides an opportunity to explore matters of faith and spirituality in an open, respectful and non-judgmental environment.

Friendship

We aim to be a place where people of many cultures and backgrounds can meet and mix in an atmosphere of friendship and engagement. At our Wednesday meal we often have students from every continent coming along — and trying out each other's food!

Faith provision

We host a variety of student faith groups as well as providing a Sunday interdenominational worship service at 11.30am, throughout the year.

Finding out for yourself

Being at university is a great time to find out what you are and what you believe.  This is an opportunity to explore faith and understand why you believe what you believe.  We are happy to chat through and explore with you at any time. 

Rev. Jane M Howitt, Full-time Chaplain to the University 

Originally from Glasgow, Reverend Howitt previously served as a Church of Scotland minister at St. Rollox in the city's Sighthill area.  St Rollox is the most culturally diverse congregation within the Church of Scotland. Whilst in this role, Jane oversaw the move into a new purpose-built Church building and was also involved in a Church-led project to support refugees, asylum seekers and others in north Glasgow.
