Geosciences

The GeoEnergy Research Group work at the interface between Geology, Geomechanics, Petrophysics, and Geochemistry to explore technologies important for the energy transition.

With expertise across a wide range of disciplines, their research encompasses physical fieldwork, modelling and laboratory experiments from pore-to-field in projects across the globe.

Collaboration is key to advancing knowledge for a safe energy future - the GeoEnergy group work closely with partners from the Institute of GeoEnergy Engineering (IGE), the Global Research Institute of Net Zero and Beyond (iNetz+), and the British Geological Survey.

Soil plays crucial role in breaking down methane from leaking legacy wells

New research has revealed that soils surrounding onshore oil and gas wells are able to absorb methane leakage, preventing the potent greenhouse gas from entering the atmosphere.
