Information, IT and Study Skills

Information Services provide classes, online materials and one-to-one appointments to help staff and students to develop a range of skills.

Information Skills (including citing and referencing)

Each School has a designated Academic Support and Liaison Librarian, who is based at the Edinburgh Campus and is available to provide support on a range of information skills, including: 

  • Citing and referencing.
  • Literature searching.
  • Evaluating information sources.
  • Using EndNote.

They provide classes, including webinars, as part of the Skills Hub and are available to teach in class. Staff and students can also email them with enquiries or to set up one-to-one appointments, either face-to-face or by Skype.  

Information skills related Skills Hub at the Dubai and Malaysia Campuses are delivered by staff based at those campuses. 

There are also Subject Guides, which have a lot of information and resources to support you (including contact details for your librarian).

IT Skills

IT specialists provide support for using Microsoft Office packages, such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Classes are provided as part of the Power Hours programme on the Edinburgh Campus, and guides are also available on the Software Guides section of the website. There is also online learning material available. 

Study Skills

The Effective Learning Service provides support to all students to develop skills in a range of areas, including:

  • Academic writing
    • Dissertations and Literature Reviews
    • Essays
    • Posters
    • Reports
  • Adjusting to higher education
  • Presentations
  • Reading and Note Taking
  • Teamwork
  • Time Management

Staff in the Effective Learning Service teach classes on these subjects, and are available for one-to-one appointments. Online guides are also available from the Skills Hub Guide.
