Research Degrees
Postgraduate research degrees involve an extended period of intensive, independent research, resulting in a significant contribution of original knowledge to your field. There are many different routes into academic research, but the path you take will depend on your own objectives and personal circumstances.
Whichever route you take, you will have the opportunity to become part of a vibrant research community. You will develop research skills as well as invaluable transferable skills, which you can apply to your academic life or a variety of professions outside of academia. Our Research students are usually expected to start their studies in September, January and May.
If you are interested in pursuing a research degree within the School, please refer to pages regarding PGR supervision before starting the application process.
PhD
A PhD is awarded for the outcomes of intensive, independent study that demonstrates an original and significant contribution to knowledge in your chosen subject. You will be assessed at the end of the programme by producing a thesis of approx. 80,000 words and you will need to defend your thesis and demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of your subject at a viva voce (oral examination) before a panel of examiners.
Our postgraduate research programmes provide you with the opportunity to undertake research under the expert guidance of academic supervisors supported by complementary research training and development activities through the Research Futures Academy.
MPhil
Our MPhil (Master of Philosophy) award is an advanced research qualification that is often offered to students who have completed the initial stages of their PhD programme, but ultimately decide not to finish the full doctorate.
The MPhil resembles a PhD but generally takes two years (full time) and does not carry the same requirement for original contribution to knowledge. You will be expected to submit a thesis at the end of your project, this will be shorter than a PhD due to the timeframe it is completed. Please note that there are usually no scholarships available for applicants considering this programme of study.
MSc by Research
Masters by Research programmes last for 12 months with a thesis expected to be submitted at the end of your project.
Masters by Research programmes aim to develop your research skills and, as a result, they provide a good preparation for postdoctoral study. If you are unsure whether a PhD is right for you, a Masters by Research can give you useful experience of what studying for a doctorate might be like, whilst at the same time allowing you to earn a valuable masters level qualification. Please note that there are usually no scholarships available for applicants considering this programme of study.
