Why did you decide to study at Heriot-Watt University?
While visiting an Open Day, I bounced off a number of faculty who gave me an overview of their programmes and advice. I was very impressed that facilitators sent me to different facilitators until I found the programme for me (Business Psychology). On reflection, this was very professional of the staff. Sure they wanted numbers for their own classes, however they had my interests at heart and sent me to other people. Another factor was the ranking score that Heriot-Watt has attracted both in UK and the world. This is an important factor anyway but even more so in the Middle East. Many people here have an academic qualification, but where it has been achieved is equally as important.
What do you enjoy most about the programme?
The approach by the University is superb, focusing mainly on the facilitators. The facilitators are very tentative, they have the time, professionalism and approach that benefits all students. A lot of queries guidance and support is given out of hours which prevents students wasting time and effort and going down the wrong road. This is essential as it prevents frustration when struggling and will also provide a more accurate output.
What will being a graduate of Heriot-Watt University do for your future?
Being at the age of 54 my career is obviously not the same as most young aspiring students. Being ex-military I have a vast experience in leadership etc. It is very good to attach the academic side to that claim now which gives strength to the whole understanding.
What's been the highlight of your time here so far?
My favourite subject was Ergonomics. This subject was probably most related to my practical learning style. The examples were real life events that could be understood and analysed. The opposite of this was probably coaching, where it was more difficult to understand as it was heavy on theory. The test element was also my favourite part within the leadership unit. I find things much easier to understand if you complete a portfolio, it provides the big picture and that, in itself makes the subject easier to absorb especially when completed.
