About
Professor Zantout has experience in teaching both in the UAE and the UK and is a Senior Fellow of Advance HE. She is fluent in English, Arabic, and German.
She has taught several courses at Heriot-Watt, including Big Data Management, Logic and Proof, Rigorous Methods, and Foundations 2.
As Programme Director, she introduced the MSc in Data Science in Dubai.
Biography
Academic Leadership and Affiliations:
Since joining Heriot-Watt in 2012, Professor Zantout has held several roles, most recently:
- MACS Deputy Head of School
- CS Associate Head of Department (Dubai)
- MSc Data Science Programme Director
- School Representative on the University Studies Committee
She engages in Learning and Teaching activities, presenting at relevant events of the Learning and Teaching Academy, and also reviews papers for journals and conferences. She runs the annual Women in Data Science (WiDS) conference and is an ambassador for Technovation, an initiative aimed at interesting young girls in technology.

Research
Her academic and research interests include teaching and learning, and interdisciplinary topics that link computing and informatics with business and society. Under this umbrella, big data, semantic technologies, machine learning, and knowledge management are employed to support work on business analytics, smart communities, and the knowledge economy.
She is currently supervising two PhD students who are researching statistical and machine learning tools that can be used in the development of relevant solutions in the health sector.
