Introduction to Subtitling

The subtitling industry has been booming for more than two years. Many translators who experienced a decrease in translation demand have turned to subtitling. This is a growing trend, as the Guardian noted in November 2021 in their article: ‘Where have all the translators gone?’

The industry is struggling not only to meet the increased demand for non-English language shows, but for intralingual subtitles, such as english-to-english, to meet the needs of people with hearing impairments - especially since current accessibility regulations came into force in September 2020. Subtitling (also called captioning when it is done interlingually) remains key to meet the accessibility standards for all audio and video recordings made publicly available including in education institutions.

This one-day CPD course offers tips and tricks to get you started in this booming industry and covers basic training on Wincaps, one of the most popular tools used in the industry.

The training is delivered by our experienced instructor, Karli Webster. Karli works has been a full-time freelance business in 2016 where she graduated with a Spanish and Applied Language Studies MSc degree from Heriot-Watt University. Karli has a key interest in subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing.

Who is this course for and what is included?

This course is open to everyone, especially those who have an interest in subtitling or are considering working as a subtitler. English proficiency is required for this course.
