Society of Exploration Geophysicists

The Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) embraces the mission of promoting the science of geophysics and the education of applied geophysicists. Founded in 1930, SEG fosters the expert and ethical practice of geophysics in the exploration and development of natural resources, in characterising the near surface, and in mitigating earth hazards. The society, which has more than 27,000 members in 138 countries, fulfills its mission through its publications, conferences, forums, web sites, and educational opportunities.

SEG provides information, tools, and resources vital to:

  • advancing the science of exploration geophysics
  • supporting humanitarian efforts
  • accelerating geophysical innovation.

The society is headquartered in Tulsa, Oklahoma. With regional offices in Dubai, UAE and Beijing, SEG is a global society dedicated to enhancing the present and future of applied geophysics.

The Heriot-Watt student chapter

Sponsored by the Edinburgh Time-Lapse Project (ETLP), The Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) student chapter at Heriot Watt University (HWU) was established more than 12 years ago. The chapter aims to encourage students to participate and spearhead projects that will address issues, challenges, and opportunities related to SEG's mission of promoting the science of geophysics.

  • Encourage students to apply for student membership in the society, and promote active participation in SEG activities.
  • Encourage and assist geophysical students and faculty members in obtaining industry experience.
  • Disseminate information on earth sciences and geophysics organising educational events for students.
  • Acquaint the academic community with current and future industry needs.
  • Support university geophysical students in their efforts to seek employment.
  • Coordinate with affiliated societies in all student-related activities and promote cooperation between relevant society committees.

Membership is open to all students who are involved or have interest in the science of geophysics and support the mission of SEG.

How to join

Everyone is welcome to join. The fee for student membership from the UK, a World Bank IV country, is $21 per year.

Upon completion of the online registration, please send your membership details to lw34@hw.ac.uk in order to be registered with the SEG Heriot-Watt chapter.
