Kristin Goldbach

Kristin graduated from the MSc in Sustainable Urban Management in 2013. She currently works as a research associate at the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (Freiburg, Germany) in the fields of smart cities, renewable energies and environmental behaviour.

Why did you decide to come to Heriot-Watt over other places offering similar courses?

Heriot-Watt University is a well-known university in Scotland with a long history of planning-related courses. The profile of the study programme enfolded a very interdisciplinary approach towards urban management including individual courses that deal with each of the three dimensions of sustainability separately (economics, environment and society). That is what I found standing out.

What did you feel were the most positive aspects of your time studying here?

The interdisciplinary modules, the international aspect (I met students from all over the world and from different academic and professional backgrounds) as well as the fact that theoretical learning was often combined with hands-on project work or related to university research projects.

What was the teaching support like?

Brilliant! Professors would always respond to students' inquiries inside and outside of the classroom. There were open discussions about suggestions and critiques of the modules and I always felt supported by the teachers in cases I needed clarifications of the tasks or suggestions what to focus on for my essay or dissertation for example.

How has your experience at Heriot-Watt benefited you since?

I increased my language skills and understand the planning system of Scotland better. The management and interdisciplinary scope of the programme has actually helped me finding the job I have.

What advice would you give to a postgraduate student considering embarking on their studies at Heriot-Watt?

It is only one year, so take out the most of it. Study hard but do not forget to experience the city and make friends.
