Jason Daisley

Jason graduated with a MEng in Civil Engineering with International Studies in 2011 with First Class Honours. After graduating he secured a position with Wood Group Kenny working as a Pipeline Engineer where he has been involved in the design of a variety of pipelines within the North Sea.

Can you tell us about your current job?

During my time at J P Kenny my role as a pipeline engineer has allowed me to gain significant experience through a wide range of subsea design projects. My involvement in these projects has required in-depth analysis of subsea pipelines to ensure they can operate safely and effectively in some of the most challenging engineering environments in the world. During the delivery of projects I have been required to work both individually and as part of a dedicated team to ensure successful completion, both on-time and in budget. Collaboration and regular communication among engineers within different disciplines is essential so that all aspects of project delivery can run as smoothly as possible.

What was your experience of doing a degree at Heriot-Watt University?

Undertaking my degree at Heriot-Watt University has been a fantastic life experience. During this time I have met some fantastic individuals, both within the Edinburgh campus and during my time studying at the University of Calgary in Canada. My interest and hard work during this period has allowed me to pursue a challenging and rewarding career implementing all the skills I have acquired during this time.

During my time at university I have developed advanced skills in time management, presentations, communication and technical skills. These combined, have allowed me to prepare myself for working life as an engineer. Acquiring and continuing to develop these skills in my current position has proven essential to my development and ability to stand out among other engineers.

What advice would you give to a student considering embarking on their studies at Heriot-Watt?

Take every opportunity available; get involved in events related to your area of study; enjoy your time and most importantly enjoy your chosen area of study. For me this was paramount to success and ultimately fuelled my development.
