Why I chose IPE?
The Institute of Petroleum Engineering at Heriot-Watt University has a worldwide reputation for being the best. Having studied my undergraduate Masters in Chemistry at Heriot-Watt, I was familiar with the Institute of Petroleum Engineering. After finishing my undergraduate Masters, I knew that I wanted my career to be in Oil and Gas, therefore the obvious choice for me was to study MSc Petroleum Engineering at IPE at Heriot-Watt University.
Why MSc Petroleum Engineering?
A couple of my friends studied the course the year before me and told me that the course was excellent and it was the best way to build a career in Oil and Gas. I had also heard the likelihood of securing a graduate job was extremely high, therefore I took their advice and applied for the course. With only 2 months left to go on the course, I can confirm these were not rumours and myself and most of my classmates have secured a graduate job before the course has even finished. Although the course has been intense, I have had a great time, made lots of new friends and learned a lot in a year.
My student experience at Heriot-Watt
Myself and most of my classmates have secured a graduate job before the course has even finished.
Having studied at the Edinburgh campus for 6 years now, I can honestly say I have had a great time. First year living in campus hall was great fun and the amount of stories I have to tell is unreal. The Edinburgh campus is excellent as it has everything you need in one place. The sports centre is brilliant – with excellent strength and conditioning facilities. I really would recommend staying on campus for at least one year as you make lots of new friends and have some hilarious times in halls.
My career plans
During the first semester of the MSc Petroleum Engineering, I secured a job with oil and gas operator Chevron, in Aberdeen. I start with them in September, straight after the course and can't wait. You will be surprised at the amount of job opportunities available by doing the MSc Petroleum Engineering.
My top tips
Do MSc Petroleum Engineering! Have fun while you are at Heriot-Watt!
