Douglas McCormick
Douglas McCormick graduated with distinction from Heriot-Watt University with an MSc in Construction Management in 1991, having studied part-time on campus. He is now CEO of Sweett.
Can you tell us about where you work and describe your role?
My current job title is Chief Executive Officer at Sweett.
Why did you choose Heriot-Watt and the programme that you studied?
My first degree is in Quantity Surveying. I was looking for a complimentary Masters that would broaden my education and introduce new skills and learning because I wanted to widen my future career opportunities. Heriot-Watt's MSc in Construction Management fit the bill very well and the University's excellent reputation ensured the quality of the degree.
Can you tell me about some of the things you liked best about your Heriot-Watt experience and the programme you studied?
I really enjoyed the challenge of fresh learning and working in construction at the same time. The University is very accessible for part-time students as are the staff team. I also had the opportunity to meet other students from around the world so there was a broader perspective in debating topics than just local cultural inputs. I enjoyed and still use much of the learning from systems thinking, strategy and the business simulation games in my working life today.
How have those things helped you in your profession?
Technology has made the world a smaller place than it was in 1991 and the ability to reach most parts of the world in a day means that my cultural learning at Heriot-Watt has stood me in good stead, as I work with colleagues around the world on a daily basis. The courses as part of the programme have given me thinking tools that are as relevant now as during my time in Heriot-Watt.
Do you have any advice for students interested in working in your field?
The construction and engineering world is a great place to have your career. Infrastructure is a global economic driver and delivering tangible structures to improve facilities for people all over the world is an exciting opportunity that I would highly recommend!
