Ahmed Sadiq is from Kenya and is currently pursuing Petroleum Engineering at the Malaysian campus

Why did you decide to come to Heriot-Watt over other places offering similar courses?

I was searching for top schools for engineering courses, specifically petroleum engineering, and one school, Heriot-Watt, showed up consistently in the top of the rankings. I found out that there were other campuses in different countries i.e Scotland, Dubai and Malaysia. The Malaysia campus was an easy choice since the cultural diversity of the country and its strategic location to all other Asian countries promised me a lot of adventure and experience that was invaluable next to my education.

What was your experience like applying and coming into the University?

Moving and relocating to a new country can be quite daunting and a bit of a hassle, but due to the help of the Student Services it became simpler. I had already had my fully furnished accommodation booked before even leaving home. All my documents to facilitate my travel was received in good time and before I even knew it, I was landing in Malaysia. Just after arriving at the airport , there was  Student Service representatives at all stages, to  pick me up , guide me all the way from my clearance to me getting moved in completely to my accommodation and prep for the beginning of my orientation and classes.

What did you feel were the most positive aspects of your time studying here?

My classes are really going well, my lecturers guide me all the way and help me with any problems I may have. The country is very beautiful and green with very mesmerizing landscapes. The cultural diversity is something that really attracted me initially and I was not disappointed, with all kinds of food and places to try and to visit. There are numerous traditional and national celebrations to represent different cultures and traditions. Also to my surprise, I found a lot of international students from all over the world and even some from Kenya and East Africa who are studying in nearby areas. Therefore, you find the best of both worlds, being able to be adventurous while having a slice of home.

What are your future goals like?

I am currently doing the petroleum engineering undergraduate programme. My future goal enter the also highly rated Masters programme in Heriot-Watt and become a highly trained and skilled engineer. There is a shortage of skilled engineers in Kenya, and with oil/gas reserves and other resources being discovered, it will be a big opportunity to make a difference and enable my people to benefit from it.

What advice would you give to an International student considering to apply to Heriot-Watt University Malaysia?

If you are in pursuit of high-class education and want to get your adventurous boots on, then it is definitely the place for you.
