Dame Frances Cairncross was awarded her honorary degree in recognition of her exceptional contributions to economics, journalism and to education.
Dame Frances Cairncross was Chair of the Court of Heriot-Watt University from 2014 to 2020. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. She chaired the Economic and Social Research Council, and subsequently the executive committee of the Institute for Fiscal Studies. From 2004 to 2014, she was Rector of Exeter College at the University of Oxford, and in 2005-06 she was President of the British Science Association. In 2019, she published a review for the government of a sustainable future for journalism.
