Project Title

Biodiversity, function and resilience in biogenic shellfish reef management and restoration.

Abstract

Native oyster reefs are a type of habitat formed by the oyster Ostrea edulis and are the focus of restorative conservation, and fisheries management. The aims of this project are to develop models for the relationships between the rare biogenic shellfish reef-building species and its associated biotic community, as well as the resilience that community might have through functional diversity.  Concepts of resilience will inform future fisheries and restorative conservation management.  The project is supported by Heriot-Watt’s James Watt scholarship, The Glenmorangie Company and the Dornoch Environmental Enhancement Project.
