Verena is a computer scientist specialising in natural-language generation, including conversational modelling as well as studies of how gender cues in voice assistants can trigger biases in the people who interact with them. Verena led her team as a double finalist (and the only UK team) to the prestigious Amazon Alexa Prize, an international research competition to build open-domain human-like conversational systems. She was recently awarded a Senior Research Fellowship by the Royal Society in recognition of her work in developing multimodal conversational systems.
