History Begins With You

History Begins With You is an exciting new initiative that aims to inspire P6 pupils to think about their future in STEM. The project has three individual parts.

Part 1 – Learn It

The Heriot-Watt Outreach Team will visit your school to run a CLPL session. Teachers will then deliver this workshop to pupils in school.

The workshop will cover topics such as:

  • What is the role of a university?
  • Why do people go to university and what does a typical day look like?
  • Why are historical scientific and maths discoveries still important today?
  • How might current research impact the future?
  • How do science and maths discoveries impact my life?

Part 2 – Try It

The Heriot-Watt Outreach Team will visit your school to run an in-class workshop. This workshop will focus on the scientific method through a series of mini experiments.

The workshop will cover topics such as:

  • What is the scientific method and why is it important
  • How can we use the scientific method to answer research questions
  • Examples of real research being carried out at Heriot-Watt University

Part 3 – Make IT

After the Try It workshop, we encourage school pupils to carry out their own mini experiments. Equipment and resources can be loaned to help teachers facilitate this. Pupils will then be invited on campus for our History Begins With You Conference.

At the conference pupils will:

  • Show the results of their own experiments as part of a poster exhibition.
  • Attend a mini lecture, mini tutorial and mini lab induction.
  • Have a try at an extra-curricular student society
  • Go on a campus tour
  • Meet real university students and staff
