Bridging knowledge gaps: the success of the Borrow a Researcher initiative
Inspired by Denmark's Human Library, where people "borrow" individuals to learn about their lives, West Lothian libraries can now "borrow" a researcher!
We've turned the traditional library role on its head by having libraries borrow researchers from Heriot-Watt University to host workshops on diverse subjects in community spaces.
The programme evolved from the Engaging Libraries Lothian Lugs project, which focused on listening to and learning from community members. We asked how they use library spaces, what they envision for the future of these spaces, and which Heriot-Watt University research areas intrigue them the most.
Through a series of surveys and focus groups conducted by the Heriot-Watt Engage team, we identified key themes of interest:
- Assisted Living with Robotics and AI
- Climate Change Solutions
- Data Security
- Marine Conservation
- Medical Technology
- Mental Health
- New Technology
- Social Disadvantage
- Sustainable Housing
From these themes we have created a series of activities where our local communities can find out more about our research tackling global challenges, and share their views on future research and innovation.
The Heriot-Watt Engage team has also spearheaded various deliberative engagement projects in the region, such as Eco Ableism, which explores the challenges people with disabilities and long-term health conditions face in leading greener, more sustainable lifestyles.
