Paul is a Professor of Physics and the current Associate Executive Dean for Education and Student Life for the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences. In this role, he is responsible for all matters relating to teaching and learning and student experience within the School across all modes and locations. He has major roles in numerous university committees and groups on delivering the best student experience across Heriot-Watt.

Paul is also a Fellow of the Institute of Physics, Chartered Physicists and a Senior Fellow of the Advance Higher Education. Amongst his proudest achievements are several nominations for, and one award of, a Student Union Teaching Oscar.

Paul’s primary focus is in the teaching and learning area: delivering the best student experience, supporting staff in all matters teaching and learning and ensuring that university processes, operations and governance deliver for all. Prior to this, he was an active researcher in the areas of biophotonics, microscopy and quantum optics. Specifically, he was interested in the quantum nature of light, photons and the use of single photons in imaging and interaction with solid state quantum systems.

Paul loves all things science and is also a huge, and proud, science fiction, heavy metal and hard rock fan. He is an avid board gamer and runner, although rarely at the same time, and a proud parent to a couple of kids.

As well as Court, Paul is a member of the Infrastructure Committee.
